From Google Glass to Smart Ring to Smart Garments, that tracks your health – Wearable technology is certainly becoming the future. Today we will introduce you to yet another wearable technology in the line – A Wearable Book, that allows you to feel the emotions associated with each character, while you read it.
Throughout your reading, generally the whole story goes through a wide variety of emotions, such as love, despair, physical sensations, coldness and warmth. This book called the Sensory Fiction is developed by an MIT team. It features a jacket that you put over your torso. Small LEDs, sounds, heating devices, vibrating mechanism and airbags complete the system. While you read the book, these sensory devices attached with the book and jacket/torso helps you feel warm, cold, affects your heart rate while the airbags tighten and loosen based on what’s going on in the story.
“Sensory fiction is about new ways of experiencing and creating stories. Traditionally, fiction creates and induces emotions and empathy through words and images. By using a combination of networked sensors and actuators, the Sensory Fiction author is provided with new means of conveying plot, mood, and emotion while still allowing space for the reader’s imagination. These tools can be wielded to create an immersive storytelling experience tailored to the reader.” – The description for project states.
Wearing a book is something we could only imagine or see in fictional movies, but these MIT researchers have turned out those fictions into a reality. Lets keep our fingers crossed and see what else this project will offer to the future.
