Research is going around the world to improve contact lenses in the aspects of better visibility, delivering medical treatment and to help the blind. But now, lenses equipped with zoom controlled by a wink are also in their prototype stage. The lens was recently shown at the annual conference of the AAAS (American Association for the Advancement of Science). Its prototype was unveiled in 2013 but now they are being improved to provide zoom control function as well.
The project is jointly led by Professor Eric Tremblay of the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Belgium, and researchers from the University of California in San Diego & United States with the funding being provided by DARPA, the research and development agency of the US military.
These contact lenses when developed completely will be able to help people with Macular Degeneration in old age. With a thickness of 1.55 mm, the lens is wider than the conventional lenses helped by a pair of glasses which activate its zoom function (a polarized filter which guides the light to the telescopic part of the lenses) by a blink of an eye. The zoom is turned off by a wink of the other eye. A network of aluminum mirrors arranged in a circle around the center of the lens act like a telescope when a ray of light pass through it and provides 2.8 times magnification. Aeration of the eye is allowed through tiny spaces in the lenses.
Arranged around the center of the lens, it incorporates a miniaturized reflector composed of a network of aluminium mirrors arranged in a circle. This arrangement allows the focusing of light like a telescope which achieve 2.8 times magnification.
The clinical trials will soon be started reported by the Professor Tremblay at the AAAS but any specific date has not been announced.
